Founded in 1941, the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell'Abruzzo e del Molise "G. Caporale" (IZS - Teramo) is a public body of the Italian National Health System and operates within the institutional collaboration network of the Ministry of Health. It provides scientific and technical support on public health, animal health and welfare, and food hygiene and safety issues to veterinary and health authorities in Italy and abroad, promoting the "One Health" approach.

The IZS - Teramo is one of ten Institutes operating as the operational arm of the Ministry of Health. By mandate, it carries out laboratory testing and surveillance activities on animal diseases, food safety, and risk assessment. It participates in the management of epidemic and non-epidemic emergencies, and in the development of contingency plans in the field of food safety as well as animal health and welfare. The Institute's headquarter is in Teramo, whit five peripheral laboratories based in the other provinces of the Abruzzo and Molise regions and Regional Experimental Centre for Fishing and Aquaculture in Termoli (Molise Region).

The IZS - Teramo has gained significant experience in the management of complex research projects, capacity building initiatives, cooperation and technical assistance projects in collaboration with the veterinary and public health authorities of non-EU countries and International Organizations, as a leader or partner of consortia aggregating institutions, research bodies, universities, and various stakeholders relevant from time to time.
