11/2018 - Workshop on "Molecular analysis and Phylogenetics" in Cairo

Last October, the MediLabSecure project organized an advanced workshop on "Molecular analysis and Phylogenetics". 15 participants from 11 different countries were welcomed for 5 days in Cairo, Egypt, from October 22nd to 26th, 2018.

For this workshop, focused on basics and advanced Phylogenetics and Phylogeography, members of three different working groups, (Medical entomology, Animal and Human virology) were selected. It was organized by the human virology team and the expert from the Institut Pasteur, with the participation of the coordinators of the other working groups, as well as the invaluable support of Mohammed Ali and Ola Bagato from the Center of Scientific Excellence for Influenza viruses, in Gizeh, Egypt, who offered to host the workshop.

The workshop has been very fruitful and everyone learned a lot on Phylogenetics and Phylogeography. While in Egypt, the team also took the opportunity of the trip to visit the three MediLabSecure contact laboratories in Cairo and Gizeh.

The organizing team would like to thank all the participants for their enthusiasm and hard work as well as the teaching team from the "Genotyping of Pathogens Platform" of the Unit Environment and Infectious risks" and from the C3BI group at Institut Pasteur in Paris.

Organised by the Italian National Institute for Health (Istituto Superiore di Sanità) with the support of IZSAM - Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise “G. Caporale”, this conference is part of the One Health Day global initiative.

This scientific Conference is organised in the framework of the MediLabSecure initiative and aims at strengthening One Health implementation for the prevention and control of arbovirus infections in the Mediterranean and Sahel Regions through the coordination and collaboration between human and veterinarian public health officers.

It is expected the participation of 22 countries (Albania, Algeria, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Georgia, Jordan, Kosovo, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, Mauritania, Montenegro, Morocco, Niger, Palestine, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Senegal, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey), represented by public health authorities from human and animal health sectors.

10/2018 - An EQA of medical entomology laboratories in the medilabsecure network

A new article has been published, about an external quality assessment of mosquito identification capacities carried out in the MediLabSecure Network. Identification of vectors is of prime importance in the field of medical entomology for both operational and research purposes.

The field workshop dedicated to entomological surveillance and vector control was held in Montpellier from October 2nd to 4th, 2018.

16 participants from 13 different countries of the MediLabSecure network were welcomed for 3 days to visit the facilities and to take note of the research activities in medical entomology that are conducted at IRD, Montpellier and to discover mosquito surveillance in the South of France with EID Méditerranée, through site and field visits, presentations and discussions.

Organized by the Network for Evaluation of One Health in September 2018 in Italy, this conference aimed at exploring how EcoHealth and One Health approaches are being evaluated and implemented in practice, learning about changes in institutional and regulatory structures at national and international levels, and discussing how the process of translating science into practice can be promoted further.

The contribution of MediLabSecure to One Health implementation in the Mediterranean region was presented during one of the sessions by Maria Grazia Dente from ISS (Human and Veterinary Public Health working group).
