10/2017 - Medilabsecure entomologists to the sove conference

MediLabSecure entomologists were well represented to the last 7th International Congress of the Society for Vector Ecology (SOVE), which took place in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, in 1-6 October 2017.




As a follow-up to the capacity building activities, the medical entomology group (WP4) gave the opportunity to present vector surveillance and/or research work to the international scientific community, by supporting the attendance of 6 entomologists: Fatim-Zohra Tmimi (PhD student, Morocco), Ali Bouattour (Tunisia), Renée Zakhia (PhD student, Lebanon), Filiz Gunay (Turkey), Tatiana Sulesco (Moldova), Dusan Petric (Serbia). Perperim Kadriaj (Albania), Igor Pajovic (Montenegro) and of course Bulent Alten, SOVE Chair (Turkey) were also present. We all showed a large and diversified range of topics on insecticide resistance, surveillance, transmission, morphology, etc. This meeting was also a valuable networking opportunity and enabled the MediLabSecure community present to exchange within and outside the network on possible collaborations and joint activities.

09/2017 - Episouth Project: contribution to preparedness to public health threats in the mediterranean

From 2007 to 2013, the EpiSouth Network consortium has marked the Mediterranean Region collective preparedness de Public Health threats.
This new piece, recently published in "Health Security", comes back on this Mediterranean partnership development, implementation strategy, sectors of intervention, and its main actions and achievements.

MediLabSecure has been developed on the foundations of EpiSouth and EpiSouth plus projects, building on these projects networks and achievements, and enlarging them to encompass the animal health and entomology sectors.

09/2017 - ONE HEALTH COurse in Bosnia and Herzegovina

The 3rd Training School of the Network for Evaluation of One Health will be held from September 13th to 15th 2017 in Sarajevo. It aims to raise awareness and capacity for One Health evaluation.

The purpose of this training school is to give participants an introduction to evaluation in general and One Health evaluation in particular using the framework developed in the Network for Evaluation of One Health.

The Training School will give participants the opportunity to learn about evaluation concepts, approaches and research in other disciplines and to exchange thoughts and ideas with experts in the field.

08/2017 - Mesa Study reports 

The MediLabSecure Situation Analysis on integrated surveillance of arboviruses in the Mediterranean and Black Sea Region (MeSA Study) has been carried out by the MediLabSecure Public Health Working Group.

We take this opportunity to thank again the “MeSa working group” which has made this Study possible. 

The MESA Study is a qualitative situational analysis involving human, animal and entomology sectors of vector borne disease surveillance in three countries of the MediLabSecure network : Serbia, Tunisia and Georgia.


The main objective of the Study is to describe how the collection, analysis and dissemination/exchange of information is organized within and between human, animal and entomological surveillance of arboviruses with the final aim of contributing to the integration of laboratory/clinical human, animal and entomological surveillance of arboviruses in the Mediterranean and Black Sea region and encourage inter-sectoral collaboration. 


07/2017 - Medilabsecure regional meeting #2

The second regional Meeting and technical workshop on public health of the MediLabSecure project was held from July 4th to 6th 2017 at the Institut Pasteur in Tunis, Tunisia.



This meeting was mainly focused on Rift Valley fever virus.

Countries represented during this meeting were Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia.

07/2017 - One Health Conference in Jordan

The first International Conference for building Human and Animal Health Capacity will be held in Amman Jordan, October 17-19, 2017.

This first edition theme is "transformation through improving livelihoods". It will provide a collaborative experience for human and veterinary health professionals that will foster multidisciplinary applied research efforts to enhance public and animal health. This event is organized by the Jordan University of Science and Technology.

05/2017 - MOSKEYTOOL

MosKeyTool is an identification tool intended to help people (entomologists or not), to identify the species of a mosquito specimen. It has been developed by the medical entomology working group (WP4) of MediLabSecure in 2017.

This interactive key includes 128 mosquito species in 66 countries (Euro-Mediterranean and Black Sea Regions) and can be easily installed on your computer.

Installation steps are explained on the MosKeyTool page, and you will find a clear video tutorial as well.

04/2017 - Arboviruses and their vectors: A mapping review

Researchers of the MediLabSecure network have collaboratively mapped arboviruses and their vectors in 16 of the project partner countries in the Balkans, the Middle-East and North Africa.

This work underlines the importance of surveillance and the implementation of adapted control strategies of vector-borne diseases in this Region.

04/2017 - MOSPICTOQUIZZ / Factsheet #2

As a follow-up to the Medical Entomology training sessions, a new on-line activity "MosPictoQuizz" has been devised within MediLabSecure. 

A set of pictures from different mosquitos has been prepared and proposed for identification.


The mystery is now revealed, the solution of MosPictoQuizz #2  was Anopheles sacharovi, an important malaria vector in Eastern Europe and the Balck Sea regions!

04/2017 - PREDEMICS Workshop

The PREDEMICS EU-funded project is organizing a workshop " Preparedness, Prediction and Prevention of Emerging Zoonotic Viruses: Challenges and Opportunities".


The workshop objectives are to:

  • Highlight the socio-economic burden and challenges represented by re-emergence and epidemics due to emerging zoonotic viruses
  • Review opportunities based on the results of the PREDEMICS project, that provided identification of risk factors for zoonotic viruses emergence and species barrier crossing, identified conditions of transmission, spread and persistence, and uncovered mechanisms of host-virus interplay that could serve as basis for intervention strategies
  • Discuss the way forward towards improved preparedness, prediction and prevention of emerging zoonotic viruses by integration of science, communication, and policy.

The event will be held in Paris on April 6-7th 2017. You can still register for FREE !

02/2017 - Site Visit Armenia

As part of the MediLabSecure activities, meetings with national partners are organized  to get a sense of the laboratories environment and discuss in more detail ongoing activities and possible collaborations within the project priorities.


The last site visit was to Armenia in November 2016. We are extremely grateful to our Armenian partners, in particular to Dr. Lusine Paronyan, who were very welcoming and provided the best conditions for fruitful discussions.
