One Health network for the prevention of vector-borne diseases around the Mediterranean and Sahel regions

> Project

Project

Emerging vector-borne diseases are strongly affected by global changessuch as modifications of ecosystems, climate change, increasing urbanization, and worldwide travel. A major challenge is to predict the impact that these variations will have on public health.

The MediLabSecure project aims to prevent vector-borne diseases by reinforcing an international network of laboratories and public health institutions in 22 beneficiary countries to ultimately promote integrated surveillance of emerging arboviruses.

This network represents a cluster for awareness, risk assessment, monitoring and control of these vector-borne diseases. This cluster require the interaction between five working groups (Human virology, Animal virology, Medical entomology, Public Health, Early warning tools/ Modelling). Each focuses on one discipline, while maintening a One Health approach to ultimately promote integrated surveillance of emerging arboviruses in the project beneficiary countries.

The MediLabSecure network encompasses partner countries around the Mediterranean, Black Sea and Sahel Regions (22 non-EU countries) by means of a collaborative execution of the stated work packages to address public health-related national needs.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

MediLabSecure is a European project (2014-2021) aiming to:

  • Create a framework for networking to improve surveillance and monitoring of emerging vector-borne zoonotic diseases of viral origin
  • Provide training for public health experts and improve national laboratories capacities to increase the communicable disease control in the Mediterranean, Black Sea and Sahel regions.
  • Enhance intersectoral and cross-border collaboration
  • Strengthen integrated surveillance (animal health, human health, entomological and environmental data)
  • Provide tools for awareness, risk assessùent and monitoring of the emerging viruses of interest

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

Prevent spread of viruses and concerned vectors (mosquitoes):

  • Strengthen and harmonize preparedness and response capacities on health threats related to (arbo)zoonotic viruses and their vectors in the targeted regions
  • Enhance awareness of the added value of integrated surveillance, risk assessment and early warning to prevent and control epidemics and epizootics

AXIS OF DEVELOPMENT

To meet its objectives, the MediLabSecure project will rely on the foundations of MediLabSecure (2014-2018) and develop the following aspects:

  • Adapt its geographic coverage by extending the network to new laboratories and national public health institutions in five Sahel countries (Mauritania, Senegal, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso)

  • Include environmental and climatic components to build pilot tools for early warning

  • Support and advocate for the integration of surveillance systems at national and regional level

  • Focus on promoting integrated vector management

  • Deploy strategies to enhance network sustainability and take stock on competences acquired during MediLabSecure, by reinforcing ownership of beneficiary        countries whenever possible

  • Emphasize the regional approach of the project

  • Include the Veterinary Services in the development of MediLabSecure network of Public Health Officials

  • Enhance intersectoral interactions of capacity building activities

  • Promote One Health approach

  • Enhance cooperation, complementarity and bridging with related initiatives, in particular those under the umbrella of CBRN CoE initiative, by i) liaising with the Regional Secretariats and ii) periodical updating with similar initiatives.
  • FUNDING

MediLabSecure is built on the foundations laid down during the previous MediLabSecure project (2014-2018). The project is funded by the European Union DEVCO/EuropeAid (Contract Number: N° 2018/402-247) in the frame of the CBRN Centres of Excellence Initiative. The Project is led by the Institut Pasteur (Paris, France)
